Why Enclosure Setup Matters

Your jumping spider's enclosure is their entire world. A well-designed habitat not only keeps your spood healthy but also allows you to observe their fascinating natural behaviors.

Jumping spiders are incredibly intelligent and curious creatures. They need an environment that stimulates their hunting instincts while providing safe spaces to retreat and build their silk sacs.

Choosing the Right Container

The ideal enclosure for a jumping spider should be:

  • Vertical - Jumping spiders love to climb! A taller enclosure is better than a wider one.
  • Well-ventilated - Cross ventilation prevents mold and stagnant air.
  • Clear - So you can watch your little friend's antics!

For adult spiders, we recommend a minimum of 4" x 4" x 6" (W x D x H). For slings, smaller containers like deli cups work great.

Pro Tip: Always choose an enclosure with secure closures. Jumping spiders are escape artists and can squeeze through surprisingly small gaps!

Substrate Options

For substrate, you have several choices:

  • Coconut fiber - Holds humidity well, natural look
  • Paper towel - Easy to clean, good for quarantine
  • Sphagnum moss - Great for humidity, beautiful aesthetic

We prefer a mix of coconut fiber with patches of sphagnum moss for the best of both worlds.

Essential Décor

Your spider needs:

1. Cork bark or branches - For climbing and anchor points

2. Fake or live plants - Visual barriers and hunting perches

3. A water dish - Optional but helpful for humidity

Temperature and Humidity

Jumping spiders are surprisingly hardy:

  • Temperature: 70-80°F (room temperature is usually fine)
  • Humidity: 50-60% for most species

Mist one corner of the enclosure every 2-3 days. Your spider will drink water droplets off the glass or plants.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Over-misting (leads to mold)
  • Too much ventilation (dries out too fast)
  • Sharp decorations (can injure your spider)
  • Placing near direct sunlight (overheating risk)

With these guidelines, you'll create a perfect tiny paradise for your new eight-legged friend!
